For over a decade we designed, built, and operated our own enterprise low-code platform, competing directly with OutSystems, Mendix, and Appian — not with page builders like Bubble or Webflow. We built the visual-to-runtime compilers, the metadata-driven business rules engines, and the generated deployment pipelines ourselves. We know exactly what these platforms are good at, because we built one that enterprises paid to run their core systems on.
Low-code earned its market for a real reason: it closed the gap between a business requirement and running software faster than hand-written code could, at a time when closing that gap meant trading code ownership for a proprietary visual runtime. That trade still makes sense today for a lot of internal tooling and citizen-developer workflows. It stops making sense once a system needs original domain logic, integrations the platform doesn't support out of the box, or a codebase engineers can actually own without a vendor's runtime underneath it.
